  • Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?
    The scholarship is open to doctoral candidates doing research in Chinese studies with approved proposals in the humanities and social sciences.
  • What fields of study are eligible?
    Humanities and social sciences related to the Chinese studies are eligible. If you have any questions or would like to confirm your eligibility based on the topic of your dissertation project, feel free to send an email to chinatimescf@gmail.com.
  • Can foreign/visiting students apply?
    Foreign students enrolled in an institution in the U.S. or Canada are eligible to apply. However, visiting scholars who are not enrolled in any U.S. or Canada schools are not eligible.
  • How many awards are available?
    A total of two applicant will be awarded USD$10,000 in memory of our founder, Mr. Chi-Chung Yu and Mrs. Alice Tsai Yu Eight more selected applicants will receive the Young Scholar fellowship award in the amount of USD$7,000 each.
  • Where can I obtain an application form?
    Application form and guidelines can be downloaded via the website under the section "Apply Now" or you can email chinatimescf@gmail.com to request the form.
  • For the application, how many words/characters does the project description in English/Chinese need to be?
    The project description in English should be 2,000-2,500 words and the project description in Chinese should be 2,000-2,500 characters.
  • My school does not provide a letter regarding prospectus approval, what should I do?
    If your school does not provide a letter stating that your dissertation prospectus is approved, you may ask the chair of your dissertation committee to provide a statement instead.
  • Besides the project descriptions, does any other document need to be in both languages?
    Only the project description needs to be in both English and Chinese. Other documents may be submitted in only English.
  • Can I send in the letters of recommendation by myself?
    Recommendations MUST be emailed directly to chinatimescf@gmail.com on official letterhead with signature by your recommenders. Please make sure that the name your professors write in the subject line of their letter of recommendation email matches the name on your application form.
  • Where do I send my completed application and application materials?
    Please email your application from and all required materials to chinatimescf@gmail.com.
  • When is the deadline to submit application?
    Applications close on June 30, 2025 at 11:59pm Eastern Time.
  • When will the results be announced?
    Announcement will be made in October 2025.
