Chi-Chung Yu, founder of the China Times newspaper, founded the China Times Cultural Foundation in 1986 to promote Chinese culture and related studies.  Since its founding, it has given out hundreds of awards to PhD candidates.  It has also sponsored numerous academic seminars, symposia and scholarly publications.  The doctoral dissertation-writing scholarship is an important annual program of the Foundation
